Qualcomm hits back strongly against WiMAX lobby, says TD-LTE globally accepted standard with strong industry support
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  22 Mar 2010

Following WiMAX Forum India allegations that the move by Qualcomm to bid for BWA (broadband wireless access) spectrum is an attempt to hoard spectrum, the latter hit out strongly against the lobby for what it termed as spreading misinformation about TD-LTE.

Qualcomm in its reply drew attention to the fact that LTE TDD has been standardized in 3GPP Release 8, which was frozen in December 2008 and finalized in March 2009.

“LTE (TDD as well as FDD) is part of Release 8 of ITU-R Recommendation M.1457-8(05/2009) titled as "Detailed specifications of the radio interfaces of International MobileTelecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000),” said Qualcomm.

On the WiMAX Forum charge that there is limited traction or market support to TD-LTE, Qualcomm replied saying that one of the leading global operators, China Mobile has adopted the standard in the same 2.3 GHz band as proposed in India.

Qualcomm said its own MDM9x00 chipset family support both TDD and FDD versions of LTE, and is interoperable with 3G (HSPA and EVDO) and this was already sampled in the second half of 2009. Moreover it said, MDM9x00 based TD-LTE trials in 2.3GHz band are planned for this year.

Additionally vendors including Motorola and Ericsson have already demonstrated solutions using the TD-LTE standard, said Qualcomm.
