The government of Scotland has successfully brought broadband access across the country with the adoption of a long-term strategy, setting an exemplar for the world to see.
The strategy, first implemented in August 2001, came in response to the country’s wretched broadband coverage that stood at a meager 43 percent as compared to UK with 63 percent.
Then newly-created Scottish Executive (now known as the Scottish Government) realized the need for an improved broadband and thus charted the objective of ‘pervasive and affordable broadband in Scotland’
Following a series of programs, which consumed an approximately £25 million investment, the country today proudly boasts of a 0.5 MBps speed broadband access for every home and offices cross wide the country.
These four key programs include, Broadband for Scotland Intervention, Exchange Activate Product, Connected Communities Network and Broadband Reach Project that aimed to ensure that any home or business premises can receive at least 512kbps if desired, costing up to £3.3 million.
Furthermore, the Scottish Government will spend another £102 million on the Pathfinder Project, to provide broadband connectivity to over 1250 public buildings in the more remote parts of the country. |
