Videocon Telecom registers 43% growth in data consumption in 2015 against 12% growth registered by the industry on 2G data
TT Correspondent |  |  11 Mar 2016

Videocon Telecom, on Friday reported an impressive 43% growth in mobile data consumption in year 2015. This growth, as per the Nokia Mbit Index 2016 mobile broadband performance statistics is 3.5 times the industry 2G data growth of 12% during the year. The Nokia Mbit Index 2016 also suggests that the overall industry mobile data consumption grew by 50% in year 2015, with 3G data consumption leading the growth at 85% and 2G data at only 12%.

Owing to the aggressive 3G product & pricing strategy by telcos, and fast growing smart phone penetration, the industry witnessed an exponential growth in 3G data usage during the year at 85%, while the 2G data somewhere took the back seat and grew marginally at 12% only. Videocon Telecom, which is a 2G player registered more than 3.5 times the industry 2G data growth rate with an impressive 43% growth in 2015. The telco was able to achieve this impressive growth by upgrading its Network to a 2.75G EDGE Network for a superior customer experience, backed by an aggressive product, pricing and customer segmentation strategy.

“I am often asked this interesting question by many industry specialists on us being a 2G player and our survival without offering 3G services when the industry is transforming towards 3G, and my answer would always be that there is room for everybody. I think we have been able to make a little more space for us by upgrading our network to 2.75G EDGE and creating a niche for ourselves. Our marketing team has been on their toes working on the 5 Ps of marketing, and strategising to ensure we are in the race competing with the 3G players.  I am delighted with the results and the fact that we have been able to surpass the industry trends. Even last year, our data growth was almost 3 times the industry growth at 126% against 42% that of the industry and the success continues,” said Arvind Bali, Director and CEO, Videocon Telecom.

At approx 11.5% data to GR, ours probably will be the highest Data to GR contribution on a 2G Network, and growing,” added Arvind Bali.

The Nokia Mbit statistics also suggests a 12% growth in monthly average data consumption per user on 2G to reach 220MB per user, while the monthly average data consumption per user on 3G witnessed 11% growth to reach 753 MB/user during the year. On the same lines, Videocon Telecom reported an impressive almost double the industry 2G growth with 21% growth in average 2G data consumption per user per month to reach 239MB data/user/month surpassing the industry average monthly consumption per user on 2G.
