Ravi Shankar Prasad claims credit for BSNL’s performance, PSU had an operative profit of Rs 672 crore for year ending March, 2015
TT Correspondent |  |  17 May 2016

There is good news. The government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has declared an operative profit of Rs 672 crore for the year ending March, 2015.

The communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has claimed that this is a big achievement for the NDA regime.

In a recent media briefing, Mr Prasad said that when NDA regime ended in 2004, BSNL had made a profit of Rs 10,000 crore. But after 10 years of UPA rule, BSNL's loss was estimated to be around Rs 8,000 crore due to the 'non-performance' of Manmohan Singh government. Now, for the first time it had an operative profit of Rs 672 crore.

Modernisation was underway in BSNL, with 21,000 towers already in place and another 21,000 in the offing. It was also proposed to have 40,000 wi-fi hot spots in another two years, according to Prasad.

Under his tenure, MTNL has also made a profit of Rs 25 crore, says the minister.
