Touch Screen’s utility at its best as Nokia comes up with SMS feature for blind
TT Bureau |  |  21 Sep 2009

Full credit to Nokia for coming with a great initiative that has almost no business interests attached to it. Nokia’s Beta labs has come up with a prototype solution that will enable blind people to use the SMS feature.

Nokia Braille Reader is a joint effort by Nokia, Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.

The solution makes use of the touch screen feature. It captures the SMSes received and presents it in a Braille and tactile form on to the screen allowing blind people to interpret the message.

Compatible devices include S60 5th Edition, including Nokia N97, 5800 XpressMusic, N97 mini, 5530, 5230 and X6.

The company has not specified about how the user will send SMSes using the feature. But nevertheless it is a big step forward.

The solution is likely to be available from October this year.
