TT Correspondent |  |  15 Mar 2013

Videocon has said that it is going to make its debut in 4G long-term evolution (LTE) services in six circles starting December this year.

Videocon has bagged spectrum in six telecom circles- Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East and West for Rs 2,221.44 crore in auctions held in November 2012.

With this the country is going to witness fierce completion in 3G successor in times to come. Bharti Airtel has already rolled out 4G services in Kolkata, Bengaluru and Pune.

Arvind Bali, director and chief executive officer of Videocon Mobile Services said that the company is rolling out 4G LTE services in six circles including Gujarat staring  December.

4G is the fourth generation of mobile phone mobile communications standards. It is a successor of the third generation (3G) standards. A 4G system provides mobile ultra-broadband Internet access, for example to laptops with USB wireless modems, to smartphones, and to other mobile devices. Conceivable applications include amended mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TV, video conferencing, 3D television and Cloud Computing.

Bali said that since the state is witnessing substantial voice and data traffic,  3G technology is no longer efficient.

Videocon will offer data service (internet) experience including Video Chat, Mobile TV, HD (high definition) TV content, digital video broadcasting etc with the 4G sercices network.

The Telecom Commission, the highest decision-making body in the communications ministry, on Monday allowed holders of so-called 4G spectrum, until now permitted to provide only high-speed Internet services on mobiles, to offer voice calls to customers by paying an additional 1,658 crore for a pan-India licence. MukeshAmbani-controlled Reliance is the only company that holds pan-India 4G permits.

Last month Bharti Airtel announced that it will soon launch voice services for its 4G, TD-LTE (time division duplex long term evolution) customers in Pune through its GSM network. Airtel has operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa.

The operator has also selected Nokia Siemens Networks to deploy its Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB) voice solution in the operator’s live TD-LTE network in the city. With CSFB, the network can transfer customers to GSM platform to make and receive voice calls and access voicemails while retaining the experience of ultra-fast data services on 4G smartphones.

Bharti Airtel has the advantage of pan-India GSM and 3G networks and with the deployment of cutting edge CSFB functionality, it will have the flexibility of using either or both the networks to support voice services on our TD-LTE platform..

In 2012 Bharti Airtel launched 4G services in Kolkata and Bengaluru and rolled out postpaid 4G services in Pune.
