Why to Buy:

This phone has good features, built and screen size in this price range.

Why to Avoid:

The 832 MHz processor is slow and delays in swapping applications and multitasking. The Bada OS is not satisfactory for smartphone users.

Our Take:

This is a good phone for average users and can be an option for this price range, but after comparing with Android OS it lacks far behind.

Detailed Review

Design:

The Samsung Wave Y is a strong fitted plastic body phone with curvy edges. It has 3.2 inch screen size with 320 x 480 pixels screen display. It measures 110 mm, 57.9 mm and 12.3 mm dimensions in height, width and depth. The weight is also lighter to just 104.8 gm. On its front, below the screen is a physical home key along with touch call keys keys whereas, above the screen is a earpiece with sensors. On the bottom of the phone it has a USB/charging connector and a mouthpiece alongside it. On the top it has 3.5 mm earjack. The left side gives you volume controls whereas, the right side is for lock/power key, but there is no dedicated camera key on the phone. The back side of Wave Y holds a 2 megapixels camera and speaker grill on the back. The overall construction of the Wave Y is good and it is comfortable too.

Interface/OS:

Samsung Wave Y runs on Bada 2.0 operating system. It has an 832 MHz Scorpion processor supported by 512 MB RAM. When tested, the browsing on this interface with power packed processor and 512 RAM was a great experience with fun. The speed was good but when on 3G multitasking and swapping applications was slower. Its TouchWiz user interface is easy to personalize and access. The only disadvantage of Bada OS is that, it lacks with applications and updates.

Camera:

This is probably the weakest section for this device. Samsung Wave Y comes with an average 2 megapixels camera with 1.4X digital zoom. The camera quality of Samsung Wave Y is normal. When tested, the outdoor images captured were fine and clearer in colours The Wave Y camera supports JPEG, PNG, GIF, WBMP, BMP and AGIF image type. It allows multiple shot modes, Single, smile shot, panorama and night.  The indoor shoots were even good. The Wave Y camera has a 1600 x 1200 pixels image resolution.

Audio/Video:

Despite its slim in look, the Samsung Wave Y has not compromised with its voice/sound quality. The sound quality when tested was good with headphones and even when on speaker mode. Samsung Wave Y supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, EAAC+, 3GA, M4A, WMA, FLAC and OGG audio formats. Like other wave phone, Wave Y also has a Stereo FM radio with RDS and recording too. The video quality of this phone is wonderful. It features HVGA recording and playback at 30 frames per second. The video call quality from 2 megapixels front facing camera is not satisfactory. It supports 3GPP, H.263, H.264, MPEG4 and WMV video formats. When tested, the video captured from the camera was below average.

Memory:

The Samsung Wave Y is rich in aspect of memory space too. In built it gives you 150 MB of memory with a micro SD card space of up to 32 GB more with support of 512 MB RAM. Surely, this can be the key for many people who love to keep their favorite playlist of audio/video with them.

Battery:

To ensure that you never miss your fun while experiencing Wave Y, Samsung has used standard Li-Ion 1200 mAh battery. And when tested, battery performed admirable results on 2G and above average on 3G. The stand by time it delivered was up to 540 hours whereas, the talk time was up to 13 hours on 2G and up to 6 hours on 3G. So, we can say that Samsung Wave Y ensures you good battery results.

Features:

The Samsung Wave Y is pre loaded with powerful features in-built. It features Social Hub and Music Hub. The Social Hub includes all major social sites like, Facebook, twitter, You Tube, Linked In and many more. It comes with the much hyped ChatOn service enables single and multi-person conversations, multimedia file sharing and even more. For better and fast connectivity it features Bluetooth 3.0 + EDR, USB 2.0, Internet Dolfin Browser 3.0, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi direct, aGPS and a micro USB port to connect or pair it with your laptop or PC. For fun and entertainment, Wave Y is embedded with games, wallpaper and FM radio with RDS.

Conclusion:

The Samsung Wave Y is certainly a promising smartphone in this price range and segment. It do not offers long list of in-built features/applications that exist in all latest Android phones. The big 3.2 inch screen is satisfactory and offers good display. The weak processor and RAM sometimes give hassle while browsing. Overall, the Samsung Wave Y is a good smartphone, but its 832 MHz weak processor is not that satisfactory comparing to other Samsung Android smartphones.

We give this tab 3.5 star rating.
