The election commission has asked Internet service Providers (ISPs) to remove any objectionable content on the websites hosted on their networks.
In a letter to Internet and Mobile Association of India (IMAI), Election Commission said that any "unlawful content" should be removed from the websites as soon as it comes to the notice of the ISPs.
This is for the first time that Internet and social media is being used for elections by political parties and individual candidates in large scale. Election Commission is also scrutinizing expenses made on advertisements on websites. This will be part of the total expense limit of a candidate.
Election Commission also wants that ISPs should ensure that model code of conducted is not violated during elections.
In October last, the Election Commission had informed all political parties and chief electoral officers that legal provisions relating to election campaign apply to social media in the same manner in which they apply to any other form of election campaign using any other media. |
