TT Correspondent |  |  22 Sep 2012

The protests over the anti-Islam video made in the US were witnessed in Kashmir with authorities taking all steps including directives to telecom service providers to block social media sites like Facebok and YouTube.

According to reports, Local residents were not able to access YouTube at all; however, access to Facebook was not uniformly blocked across the valley. Twitter was accessible until midmorning.

Internet access and cellphone service were blocked in Kashmir on Friday afternoon, resuming at 5 p.m.

The government on Friday issued an order which read, "In the interest of public safety and for maintaining public order, the government directed all licensed Telecom Service Providers and Internet Service Providers to make arrangements to ensure that their subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir should not be able to download or upload the contents".

"If necessary, due to technical reasons, the Fully Qualified Domain Names shall be blocked viz www.YouTube.Com, www.Facebook.Com etc," the order reads.

"They shall also ensure that the bulk mails that are being generated from their subscribers do not contain this file/versions of this file and the content and in case of suspicion (or) detection, the same shall be blocked and filtered," it said.
