Message for Huawei and ZTE from Xi Jinping's visit: They will continue to be under intelligence radar as trust deficit continues between India and China
Manoj Gairola |  New Delhi |  19 Sep 2014

For Chinese telecom majors Huawei and ZTE, it is back to square one for all practical purposes. On Saturday, Chinese president Xi Jingping will go back to China. So will be the euphoria of good relations between India and China.

When Narendra Modi came to power, in May, the two companies were celebrating. They were under impression that the past relations between Modi and the Chinese political leadership will help them. But they forgot that in international relations only self interests matter.

The current visit of Xi to India establishes that there is a big trust deficit between India and China. There are two indicators of this:

i) Instead of $100 billion, China committed only an investment of $20 billion in India over the next five years.
ii) During his visit, Indian media showed only anti-China news, mainly originating from Intelligence agencies. It was more of an adverse publicity than a positive development for China.

So the message is clear for the Chinese companies – You will have to fight your own battle in India. Don’t expect any change in the attitude of Indian government towards Chinese companies.
