The prime accused in the 2G case and the former telecom minister A Raja has told the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) that telecom ministry was well within its right to seek the legal opinion from then Solicitor General G E Vahanvati without approaching the law ministry first, according to a PTI report.
JPC is probing the alleged irregularities in the allocation of 2G licences during the tenure of A Raja. The Supreme Court last year had cancelled all the 122 such licences.
Raja said that it was perfectly permissible to approach the law officer in certain cases.
He was quoted by PTI as saying that it is "perfectly permissible" for a government department to seek the opinion of a law officer when he is already representing it in litigation and advising it on same issues.
"It was in these circumstances that on 7.1.2008, the DoT officials put up a note raising certain issues relating to processing of applications”, he said.
