Sigve Brekke of Telenor in problem over Uninor appointment, Subramanyam Swamy to file petition in the CBI court over his links with Pakistan
TT Correspondent |  |  21 Jan 2012

Sigve Brekke, managing director of Unitech Wireless that operates services under Uninor brand, may be in trouble as Janta Party chief Subramanium Swamy today told the trial court that he may file an Intervention Application on the charges that Brekke’s appointment is threat to national security.

In the trial court, he showed a media report with headline “Telenor executive was director in Pak Unit too”. The report published in a leading national daily clearly establishes Brekke’s links with Pakistan.

Later, outside the court Swamy told the media persons that he would file an Intervention Application (IA) on this issue.

The present 2G scam was exposed due to Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by Swamy and Prashant Bhushan, an eminent lawyer and activist. It is because of them that the biggest scam in India was unearthed. Sanjay Chandra, the chairman of Unitech Wireless was in Tihar Jail for more than six months for his alleged involvement in the scam. (Note: CBI has filed charge sheet and the trial is on. He is not guilty unless proven in the court.)

Now, it is Brekke who may be in trouble due to the PIL. Indian authorities also believe that Telenor may have concealed facts. In fact, in a similar incidence, S Tel was denied permission to induct a board member who had held a similar non executive position in Pakistan.

When the company was granted approval from Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) on conditions that “no personnel who are working in Telenor Pakistan shall be allowed to work in the Indian company.”

Brekke was a director of Pakistan Telenor for five days after joining the Unitech Wireless board. As a Uninor director, Brekke made several visits to Pakistan and met ministers and bureaucrats in the past two years, according to Pakistan government documents.

Among other visits, he headed a delegation of Telenor Pakistan and met Pakistan’s minister of state and chairman of board of investment Salim H Mandviwalla.
