Telecom operators’ bodies COAI and AUSPI have written to department of telecommunications (DoT) expressing their inability to stop the bulk SMSes and MMSes from the post-paid connections citing certain technical problems.

Keeping in view the panic that the hate campaign though text messages and the images created among the Northeast people of India in cities like Bangalore, the government had restricted the the number of SMS and MMS to five per subscriber per day for 15 days.

According to reports, while pre-paid mobile users, who account for over 90% of the 930 million mobile subscriber base, are unable to send more than five messages in a day, post-paid users do not seem to be facing any problem.

According to COAI Director General Rajan S. Mathews, this because of the lack of technology which can track post-paid users on a real-time basis.

 “Keeping in view the security requirement, our member service providers have made all efforts to comply with the instructions but have been facing some technical challenges”, said AUSPI in the letter.
