DoT asks CDMA players to pay one time fee-Report
TT Correspondent |  |  18 Mar 2013

The CDMA telecom operators are believed to have been slapped with notices by the government regarding payment of one- time-fee for holding spectrum beyond 5 Mhz in 800 Mhz band.

For this Department of Telecom has said that the rate for one-time spectrum charges shall be applicable from 01-01-2013. The order asks them to pay for additional spectrum for the rest of the licence period.

As per the order, no charges will be levied on the operators who are willing to surrender the additional spectrum. BSNL also holds CDMA spectrum above 2.5 MHz in Kerala but the company has already written to the government that it is willing to return the excess airwaves.

The annual charges will be based on the reserve price fixed for spectrum auction held on March 11. The government is expected to raise Rs. 3,033 crore by levying one tine fee all CDMA players, according to a PTI report.

Operators like Tata Teleservices, Sistema Shyam (SSTL) Reliance Communications,), BSNL and MTNL hold spectrum beyond 2.5 Megahertz (Mhz).

The DoT has already issued demand notices to old GSM operators for collecting one-time spectrum fee. The government is likely to get over Rs. 23,000 crore from the GSM operators.

In November, the government decided that existing GSM operators should pay for holding spectrum above 6.2 MHz retrospectively, from July 2008 to December 31, 2012. For spectrum above 4.4MHz, they would have to pay for the remaining period of their licences starting January 1, 2013.
