Technology | | Govt appoints Sarvesh Singh as new CMD of Bharat Broadband Network Limited | | TT Correspondent | | 23 Jan 2019 | | | The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Tueday appointed Sarvesh Singh as a new chairman-cum-managing director of the Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL).
Singh, an Indian Railways Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) 1988-batch officer will hold a joint secretary-level position under the department of telecommunications, the department of personnel and training (DoPT) in a notification said.
The Narendra Modi government has also split the portfolio, following the removal of Sanjay Singh who was holding the position of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) administrator and chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of BBNL.
The decision has come on the backdrop of underachievement of ambitious BharatNet program undertaken by the special purpose vehicle (SPV) BBNL that aims to connect 2.5 lakh gram panchayats or village blocks with high-speed Internet by March 31, 2019.
The Centre has last week appointed Bihar cadre officer Ansuli Arya as the new USOF administrator who is, however, yet to take new charge.
In a recent letter to outgoing BBNL chief Sanjay Singh, telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan expressed displeasure over the program's progress and underutilisation of network, and added that the initiative was being monitored by the highest level in the government. |
