LTE-TDD to be commercially available from 2011
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  01 Dec 2010

The race between WiMAX and LTE-TDD in BWA (broadband wireless access) space may end up in favour of the latter suggests Qualcomm.

On the sidelines of a live demonstration for selected media, the company’s president of Qualcomm India and South Asia and senior vice president, Kanwalinder Singh says, "We see commercial deployments of LTE-TDD by second half of next year.”When asked about the availability of end user terminals, he adds,” We have already witnessed commercial rollout of LTE networks in developed markets such as Japan, Sweden and USA. We foresee the same end user terminals to be made available to the Indian market as well.”

Earlier in the day Qualcomm and Ericsson demonstrated LTE TDD at 2.3 GHz in outdoor environment. This follows Reliance and Ericsson demonstrating similar LTE mobility trials.

On the occasion, Kanwalinder Singh said, “We are pleased to have collaborated with Ericsson on this demonstration showcasing LTE TDD mobility in an outdoor environment in India. LTE TDD, with its attributes of mobility and 3G interoperability, is the technology most suited for deployment in India’s 2.3 GHz BWA spectrum.  The demonstration today is a significant step towards commercial availability of infrastructure and chipsets that will support both 3G and LTE TDD in 2011, and we will continue to work with our ecosystem partners to drive the growth of mobile broadband in India with 3G and LTE.”

“LTE in India is a reality today,” said Gowton Achaibar, head of region for Ericsson India.  “We are honored to have been chosen by Qualcomm to showcase the field demonstration of LTE TDD using Qualcomm chipset-based USB dongles.  This demonstration testifies the availability of the complete ecosystem for LTE TDD and opens up limitless opportunities of broadband with seamless connectivity on the move.  LTE will enable richer communication services for consumers and businesses alike.”
