The outrage over China's People's Liberation Army for its hacking activities around the world was witnessed in the Indian Parliament on Friday with Minister of State for Communications and IT Milind Deora quoting from the a report said that it is the source of hacking attacks against more than 100 companies globally, including in India.
A US based security firm Mandiant report had blamed Chinese Liberation army for systematic cyber espionage and data theft against organizations around the world.
It said that a secret Chinese military unit is the major player in cyber espionage against an array of computer networks around the world. The report was widely covered by the Indian Media.
Mandiant research and observations indicate that the Communist Party of China is tasking the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to commit systematic cyber espionage and data theft against organizations around the world.
"Government is aware of news reports published by Indian dailies mentioning findings of a report produced on February 19, 2013 by an American computer security company called Mandiant, indicating a PLAunit in Shanghai, China as the likely source of hacking attacks against more than a 100 companies around the world," he added.
He said as per the policy implemented by the government of India, strict exclusion between Internet and official net works is being maintained by organisations involved in strategic activities.
“The government has adopted an integrated, multi-pronged strategy covering aspects such as technical, administrative, legal and people steps to protect cyber space”, he said.
The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) tracks latest cyber threats and issues advisories and alerts to organisations suggesting measures to prevent and respond to the cyber security incidents, Deora said.
Mandiant, had released a detailed report exposing a multi-year espionage campaign by one of the largest “Advanced Persistent Threat” (APT) groups. The report, “APT1: Exposing One of China’s Cyber Espionage Units”, provides evidence linking one group, designated by Mandiant as APT1, to China’s 2nd Bureau of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff Department’s (GSD) 3rd Department (Military Unit Cover Designator 61398) and details how it has systematically stolen confidential data from at least 141 organizations across multiple industries.
Britain’s parliamentary intelligence and security watchdog is also investigating whether Huawei which has partnership with telecoms operator, BTGroup PLC in the country and access to communications infrastructure in the country is a potential security threat because of its links with Liberation Army.
