Karbonn launches Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ tablet in India at Rs. 6990
TT Correspondent |  |  03 Aug 2012

Giving a fillip to low-cost tablet war in India Karbonn Mobiles, the fastest growing mobile brand in the Indian telecommunication eco-sphere, on Friday launched the country’s first budget tablet (Karbonn Smart Tab 1) running on the revolutionary Android 4.1 ‘Jelly Bean’ platform.

The company claims that it is the first to bring in the latest innovation from the Android world to the Indian technological shores which is touted to be the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet.

The tablet incorporates the popular, ultra low-power MIPS-Based JZ4770 SoC from Ingenic as its running core and leverages the simplicity and elegance of the MIPS architecture, resulting in features like extremely low power consumption, lightening fast 1.2GHz performance and a high level of functional integration.

The device will be available at pre-book from the Karbonn home site. In its endeavour to involve the existing consumer base of the Karbonn Smart Tab 1 with the revolutionary Jelly Bean Android platform, Karbonn Mobiles will provide a free upgrade to the consumers from their pre-loaded Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) platform to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) platform. This move, in continuation of Karbonn Mobiles’ surge to become the leading mobile phone player in the global telecommunications market, provides an outreach which is unmatched anywhere in the world.

Commenting on the launch, Pradeep Jain, Managing Director, Karbonn Mobiles said, “We intend to be the dominant marketer in tablet market wherein we wish to reach upto 200K units per month by focussing on enterprise business solutions segmentation, education, healthcare & hospitality and new-age business verticals.”

“This new tablet demonstrates continued adoption of our cost-effective JZ4770 SoC in mobile devices. The JZ4770 SoC leverages the simplicity and elegance of the MIPS architecture, and features extremely low power consumption, 1.2GHz performance, and a high level of functional integration. Millions of tablets are already shipping around the globe based on our design, and we anticipate increasing success as more and more companies recognize the differentiation our solution can enable,” said Qiang Liu, Chairman and CEO of Ingenic Semiconductor.

“After joining with Ingenic to announce the world’s first Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich’ tablet in December, we have achieved numerous additional tablet design wins. Working closely with Ingenic and its OEMs, we are seeing increasing success for the MIPS architecture in tablets, especially in emerging markets such as China, Indonesia and now India,” said Gideon Intrater, Vice President of Marketing, MIPS Technologies.

Features of the new Karbonn Smart Tab 1 are:

Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean Platform)

17.8cm capacitive 5-point touch screen

1.2GHz processor

3,700 mAh battery

3D gravity sensor
