MediaTek advances 5G portfolio to power the rollout of 5G devices in 2020
TT Correspondent |  |  25 Feb 2019

MediaTek has come out with the advancements to its 5G portfolio to power the rollout of 5G devices in 2020 for the sub-6GHz spectrum on Monday.

The Taiwanese company showcased the Helio M70 5G modem for the intelligent home running 5G data transfer speeds as well as mmWave over-the-air tests of MediaTek’s 5G antenna arrays at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona.

The company said that the Helio M70 demo runs at 4.2Gbps 5G data speeds – the industry’s fastest sub-6GHz live 5G modem demonstration to date.

“Starting with Helio M70, we give manufacturers an ideal solution to deliver a 5G experience with ultra-fast connectivity and intelligent energy savings, all in a compact form factor for elegant smartphone designs,” TL Lee General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communication business unit said.

MediaTek is targeting sub-6GHz first to bring 5G connectivity to the largest markets, in its efforts to boost market share and take on rival Qualcomm.

The US-based chipmaker has unveiled integrated single-chip Snapdragon X55 that supports 5G millimeter wave and sub-6 GHz spectrum bands.

The sub-6GHz frequency band, according to MediaTek, is ideally suited for urban environments and rural areas, enabling MediaTek to make high-speed connectivity truly accessible for people around the globe.

Helio M70 supports the sub-6GHz frequency band non-standalone (NSA) and standalone (SA) 5G network architectures.

MediaTek’s first-generation 5G solution comes with LTE and 5G dual connectivity (EN-DC) with dynamic power sharing capability, multi-mode support for every cellular connectivity generation from 2G to 5G.
