Mobile communications technologies like smartphones and laptops have enhanced the personal productivity of bulk of Indians and have bettered the work-life balance for umpteen of them, admitted respondents of an international workplace survey.
More than 90 percent of Indian respondents felt that mobile communications technology have boosted their personal productivity.
The unique quality of mobile technologies that provides one with the liberty of working outside the office, yet remain in constant contact, has proved as a positive development to 83 percent of respondents.
“Many employees now have the capacity to work from home or away from the office, at any hour of the day, and this is proving positive for productivity and work-life balance. Even though some are working longer hours, this is largely offset by the greater freedom and flexibility of the virtual workplace,” said Mr.Dhiren Shantilal – Sr. Vice President APAC, Kelly Services.
The trend is seen to be led by Gen Y (aged 18-29) employees who place a much higher priority on a sound work-life balance than Gen X (aged 30-47) and baby boomers (aged 48-65).
However, the productivity benefits from new technologies are being sensed across all the generations, with a total of 72 percent saying productivity is ‘much better’, and 20 percent finding it ‘slightly better’, while 3 percent said productivity is lower, and 6 percent felt it made no difference.
“There is a blurring of the line between work and personal life as employees are integrating information technology into their lives at many levels. Employers who use technology to enhance working arrangements are also likely to reap productivity benefits and to be seen as employers of choice,” adds Dhiren.
The survey, which was organized by the Kelly Global Workforce Index tapped over 100,000 people across 34 countries including approximately 5,000 in India. |
