BSNL takes the final call on tariff war, slashes tariffs by almost 50 percent
TT Bureau |  |  09 Jun 2008

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) today announced the reduction in STD rates of its cellular services by 40- 50 percent, reflecting the growing competition among telecom service providers.

The operator has also announced a slash in the call charges of its landline services by 50 percent.

According to the revised call rates on landline services, STD rates have been slashed from Rs. 2.40 per minute to Rs.1.20 per minute to all networks in general and ‘sulabh’ plan.

“The intra-circle call charges, to BSNL network and inter circle (STD) call charges to all the networks has also been reduced by 50 per cent,” Goyal said.

The roaming charges under prepaid and postpaid serves have also been redrawn.

Earlier, state-owned telecom service provider MTNL and private telecom operators like Airtel and Vodafone including others had brought down their STD and roaming charges.

It is indeed interesting to note the new tariff war, as BSNL can not lag behind. But the announcement should have come earlier as MTML has already done it. Anyway better late than never. Tariff under different plans are not notified yet. BSNL site at 0845hrs does not show anything about the tariff reduction at all. They should have updated their website as soon as the announcement is made. Lets wait for it.

BSNL is a public sector organisation. It has to compete with private operators . Private operators can pruchase equipments and expand their services in a short time. BSNL is a public sector and is accountable also. In spite of many constrints, BSNL is giving sevices at lowest rates. BSNL broadband has earned a good name.By reducing tariff for STD, surely BSNL will get more subscribers. I hope that should lead and race ahead of other operators in tariff war.

AFTER GIVING SO MUCH ADVERTISEMENT IT IS ASHAMED TO SAY THAT BSNL HAD DONE VERY LITTLE WHEN COMPARED TO THE ADVERTISEMENT. WHEREAS OTHER SERVICE PROVIDERS WHO USE BSNL LINE FOR THEIR OPERATION ARE PROVIDING LOWER TARIFF RATES FOR MOBILE, BSNL IS DOING NOTHING. AN OFFER TO CALL TWO NUMBERS FOR 10 PAISE WAS DOUBLED. NOW IT IS 20 PAISE. MOBILE TO MOBILE IS 90 PAISE IN BSNL WHEREAS IT IS 40 TO 50 PAISE FOR OTHER PROVIDERS. THERE ARE DEFINITELY SOME BIG PLAYERS BEHIND THIS TARIFF ALSO. RECENTLY BSNL HAD WAIVED THE AMOUNT DUE FROM RELIANCE TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW CAN A PUBLIC COMPANY DO LIKE THIS BY CHEATING ITS TRUSTED CUSTOMERS?????????? DON'T RALIANCE HAVE MONEY TO PAY BSNL? WHY CAN'T BSNL COLLECT MONEY FROM OTHER PROVIDERS AND REDUCE TARIFF FOR ITS CUSTOMERS???? SOME VESTED INTERESTS ARE PLAYING SINCE THE COMPANY IS FUNCTIONING IN INDIA. WE HAVE TO BEAR THIS SINCE WE ARE INDIANS.
