Intel to lead WiMAX patent pool alliance
TT Bureau |  |  10 Jun 2008

Intel, in collaboration with Clearwire, Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Samsung, and Sprint announced the formation of a WiMAX patent pool to give companies access to WiMAX patents at predictable costs.

The Open Patent Alliance (OPA), which is an organization formed in the same lines as the alliance formed amongst Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, NextWave Wireless, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, and Sony Ericsson earlier in the year, is a consortium of companies that hold WiMAX 4G mobile broadband technology patents and will act as the official patent holder for companies that want to purchase WiMAX licenses.

Furthermore, any company that wants to create a WiMAX-enabled device or application will have to reach a licensing agreement with the OPA before selling their product on the market.
