Google, Facebook asked to screen content
TT Correspondent |  |  06 Dec 2011

Concerned over defamatory, offensive and  distasteful  content that appear on the social media sites like facebook, the government, according to media reports has asked Internet companies and social media sites to prescreen user content.  They have also been asked to remove such content.

The reports say the  issue will be discussed in a meeting between the IT and Communication Minister Kapil Sibbal and  Top officials from the Indian units of Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Facebook on Monday.

The issue had come up six weeks ago when Sibal had pointed towards a page that showed UPA chairperson and Congress Party’ President Sonia Gandhi in a distasteful manner to one of the legal representatives from the top Internet service providers and social networking sites in a meeting in New Delhi.
