Broadcom powers Humax’s first 40nm high definition satellite set-top boxes
TT Correspondent |  |  01 Mar 2012

Broadcom Corporation global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, has said on Thursday  that Humax, a premier set-top box manufacturer, is now deploying HD satellite set-top boxes, based on Broadcom technology, to emerging countries, proliferating low cost and interactive HDTV throughout the world.

The Broadcom BCM7358 HD satellite STB SoC reduces design complexity, size and overall system cost to accelerate deployment of HD satellite STBs throughout emerging markets.

Broadcom’s 40nm design combines a high performance CPU, advanced security functionality and connectivity support including DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance).

“Lower cost HD set-top boxes will help Asian satellite operators to proliferate HD video and other advanced services to consumers that previously could not afford them. Emerging markets require cost-optimized solutions supporting only a single television, options for integrated or external security, robust 2D user interfaces, and HD video”, said Sam Rosen, Senior Analyst, ABI Research.

“Leveraging our extensive experience in set-top box development and Broadcom’s robust 40nm design, we achieved very quick time-to-market to deploy the industry’s first set-top boxes designed in 40nm, opening the way to exciting HDTV experiences throughout the world”, said Dr. Dae Gyu Byun, CEO, Humax.

Nicholas Dunn, VP of Marketing, Satellite Set-Top Box, Broadcom said, “As the momentum to deploy HDTV intensifies throughout the world, we are pleased to continue our partnership with Humax, fueling low cost and interactive TV to emerging countries. This is a significant milestone in the accelerated development and quick deployment of high performance 40nm set-top boxes worldwide.”
