After the recent directive by DoT to monitor mobile phone radiations, the Union Health Ministry also seems to be concerned about the possible harmful effects of mobile radiations and hence has commissioned a study on effects of these radiations on health of humans.
The Indian Council of Medical Research will initiate the study in association with JNU''s School of Environmental Sciences and obstetrics & gynaecology, neurology and biochemistry departments of AIIMS.
The study among other issues will research on whether the radio frequency wave radiations in India conform to international standards.
Apart from issues like depression and sleeping disorders, the research will also study if the radiations cause cancer or other major diseases in humans. Another aspect under the scanner of thestudy will be to analyse the effects of radiations on fertility of humans and side effects if any on menstrual cycle, hormonal changes in women and abnormalities if any on the male reproductive system.
The sample size of the study is reported to be 4000 divided into five groups i.e. heavy exposure male group (1,000 men who talk on the mobile phone for more than four hours a day), moderate exposure male group (1,000 men who speak for more than two hours but less than four), control group (1,000 men who don't use a cellphone), 500 heavily exposed women and a 500-strong female control group. |
