BSNL gets aggressive on CDMA space, to launch bundled handset offers
TT Correspondent |  New Delhi |  18 Aug 2008

While CDMA majors are looking forward to enter the GSM fray, PSU is now eying the CDMA segment in the country with an investment plan of Rs 2000 crore and schemes to offer bundled handset offers.

As per reports, the company has asked leading handset manufacturers to submit their interests on such a tie-up at national level, which will be a non-exclusive alliance.

The company’s letter to such handset manufacturers states that BSNL will monitor the performance of the manufacturers and the alliance may be terminated in event of the manufacturer not meeting the laid out standards. Moreover the conditions state that the model should be locked for use in BSNL network only and the models should come with a 2-year replacement guarantee.

BSNL and the manufacturer will share the marketing responsibilities.

If the responses are high the criteria for selection will include strength of the company (turnover, distribution channel, after-sales centres etc), suitability of offered product (specification, features etc), cost competitiveness etc otherwise the firms fulfilling all eligibility criteria will be selected and be allotted circles, zones or even be made pan-India partners.
