The European Commission’s decision of adopting Nokia backed mobile TV broadcast standard over Qualcomm Inc. has pushed the latter down in the wider chip market.
EU commissioners chose Digital Video Broadcasting for Handhelds (DVB-H) over rival standards such as Qualcomm’s MediaFLO, and directed EU nations to favor its decision to create economies of scale and get the nascent technology off the ground.
The Commission said setting the DVB-H as the preferred European Union standard would give the industry a boost.
“For mobile TV to take off in Europe there must first be certainty about the technology,” said European Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding.
EU spokesman Martin Selmayr said Europe was ‘ending a war on standards’ by adopting DVB-H, the most widely used mobile TV format in Europe.
EU called on other member states to also follow the example and termed the move as “an important signal” to other nations preparing to decide whether to opt for DVB-H or other standards. |
