Emirates aircraft offers in-flight mobile services
TT Bureau |  |  21 Mar 2008

Emirates became the first airline to offer in-flight mobile services to its passengers. The service will also permit the passengers to send and receive text messages costing premium international roaming rates.

Emirates chairman and chief executive Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum said “The aircraft’s fleet is equipped with the AeroMobile system which enables the passengers to make calls to their loved ones on the move. It is also equipped with email and text messaging capabilities via the in-seat entertainment system. “

AeroMobile chief executive Bjorn-Taale Sandberg said “We are delighted to join Emirates in delivering a genuine world first for the airline industry.”

The company said it is investing around $27 million to fit its fleet with the AeroMobile system ensuring that passenger mobile phones work at their absolute minimum power. This adds to their safety on the aircraft.
