Content players who specialize in mobile VAS offerings have their task cut out. According to a new study carried out by web browser developer Opera, men dominate the mobile web browsing domain heavily as they comprise about 90 percent of the total demographics for mobile browsing. In India males comprise as much as 97 percent of the total users.
Additionally youth seem to be more inclined towards mobile browsing with 39 percent falling under 18-27 age group and 34 percent falling in the 28-37 age group category. In India however under-18 mobile web users comprise only 5.6 percent.
But the study mentions that with increasing popularity of mobile browsing, things will surely improve and will see more involvement of females as well. "Because accessing the Web on mobile devices will become more pervasive than accessing the Web with computers, we expect that over time one gender or one age range will not dominate," said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software.
South Africa has the highest percentage of female users at 25 percent.
