P Balakrishna |  New Delhi |  10 Jan 2008

Cable MSO Comcast has become the fourth largest landline phone company in the USA with a subscriber base of 4.1 million.

The company made an announcement in Las Vegas on Tuesday it had “become the country''s fourth-largest phone-service provider” with 4.1 million phone customers compared to No. 1 US carrier AT&T with 62.9 million followed by Verizon’s 42.3 million landline customers and Qwest’s 13.9 million.

”Comcast Digital Voice is the fastest-growing home phone service in the country and we're reinventing the way consumers think of home phone service in the process,” said Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation in a statement at CES. “Our rapid rollout of advanced services like Comcast Digital Voice has enabled us to transform Comcast into the only company in the U.S. to offer integrated video, high-speed Internet and phone services to more than 40 million households.”

Comcast’s claim gives a boost to the VoIP revolution and shows how technology can be used effectively to utilize landline network.
