Use of SMS may lead to low IQ, says US study
TT Bureau |  |  20 Sep 2008

Mobile services continue to be plagued by health concerns. After recent study reports over health hazards due to mobile radio radiations, a new US-based study which says that use of SMSs or text messaging services lead to lowering of Intelligence Quotient (IQ).

The study lead to California Public Utilities Commission banning the use of mobile phones altogether in moving trains. The ban also comes on the back drop of major accident witnessed in America when two trains collided the reason for which was attributed to commuter-engineer using text messaging services.

"The truth of the matter is there are hobbies that are compatible. You don''t want to do mushroom-hunting and bird-watching at the same time, and it is the same with texting and other activities. We have seen people walk into parking metres or walk into traffic and seem startled by oncoming cars," said Paul Saffo, a technology trend forecaster who conducted the research in US.

“The act of texting automatically removes 10 IQ points," he added.
