Mumbai Municipal Corp enables property tax payment through SMS
TT Correspondent |  Mumbai |  20 Oct 2008

In a unique initiative to ease the property tax payment process for citizens of Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has introduced a concept of payment through SMS.

With this a citizen can purchase cards of denomination Rs 100 to Rs 20,000 to be available at Railway stations and other retail outlets. Every month the user will be asked if he/she wants to pay tax through SMS. If the user answers in affirmative, the relevant amount will be deducted from his account.

The BMC says that the project is ready for implementation from the new fiscal year in April.

Currently BMC has updated database of all 35,000 individual property tax payers, which has been verified by the respective ward officers.
