TT Correspondent |  Mumbai |  17 Feb 2009

Vodafone followed its GSM counterpart, Airtel in blocking the services of VAS provider, Netcore Solutions citing that the services do not conform to the regulations as laid down by the Trai.

Netcore maintains that its services are purely opt-in services and are in no way unsolicited services. It claims to have 3.8 million subscribers for its services., ‘MyToday’.

Vodafone though has blocked access to Netcore’s short code 575758.

Earlier in November 2008, Bharti Airtel had also blocked the services citing the same reason.

In Real They(Vodafone/Airtel) dont want to lose the revenue comes from VAS SMS subscriptions so they block that,Earlier Airtel had blocked MyToday SMS service quoting the service do not comply with telecom regulations in November 2008 However, the services were later restored in Airtel! after the oppose by may customres. The "My Today" FREE SMS services were "opt-in" and not unsolicited. This means that a mobile phone user has to subscribe to the service by sending an SMS. According to Trai’s recent ‘Recommendations on Growth of Value Added Services and Regulatory Issues’, telecom access service provider cannot block mobile portals of consumers who have subscribed to GPRS or WAP services. TRAI has recommended that there cannot be “selective blocking of mobile portals or short codes
