IBM India develops new browsing protocol HSTP allowing users to talk to web
TT Bureau |  |  16 Mar 2009

The internet is set to become more user-friendly as International Business Machine (IBM) unveiled a new internet browsing technology which enables users to talk to the web and thereby create voice-enabled websites.

The Telecom Web Browser has been developed by IBM’s India development team using a new internet protocol called Hyper Speech Transfer Protocol (HSTP) similar to the text-based HTTP.

IBM foresees a scenario where users access the website using a telephone typically a mobile phone. The new protocol developed by IBM aims to provide a communication bridge between the web and voice.

“The new protocol would enable voice-driven transactions that can span multiple cross-enterprise voice applications thus providing a seamless browsing experience to the telephony user,” said IBM.

The company claims to have received unique applications and features using the technology in some of the pilot projects initiated in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
