DataWind completes Aakash 2 project
TT Correspondent |  |  02 May 2013

DataWind on Thursday said that it has completed 100,000 Aakash low-cost computing access devices for IIT-Bombay (under the Indian Government’s Ministry of Human Resources Development’s National Mission for Education through Information Communication Technology).

In March Datawind, the maker of the Aakash tablet had refuted the reports putting question mark on its capability to supply adequate number of Aakash 2 tablets because of delay in the production.

Clearing the air on the issue Suneet Singh Tuli, President & CEO of DataWind Ltd had accepted that there was delay in production but said that it happened due to  verifications process that Customs needed to conduct on the Exemption Certificates for certain components issued by IIT-Bombay.

The controversy arose when some reports appeared a section of media quoting the HRD minister, Pallam Raju as saying that the government is waiting for the report by a committee set up to review Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) for action against Datawind for the delay. Datawind was supposed to supply the tablet by December 31, 2012.

The reports said that Datawind could supply only 20,000 units of Aakash 2 as against a commitment of 1 lakh units. DataWind is to supply 100,000 units of Aakash 2 to IIT Bombay, which intends to distribute them to Engineering University and College students.

DataWind had won the project in an open tender for the supply of Aakash1 devices at $49.98, was subsequently modified to 98,000 Aakash2 devices and 2,000 devices with DataWind’s recommendations for Aakash3, all at a price of Rs.2,263 (currently $41.61).

The Aakash2 devices are the world’s lowest cost computing access devices, delivered to IIT-Bombay with 12 months warranty and accessories at only Rs.2,263 (competitively featured tablets are available in Indian market for around Rs.5,000).  The devices utilize multi-touch projective capacitive touch screens manufactured at India’s only touch-screen manufacturing facility, established by the company in Amritsar.
