In a move to give a competition to Intel, AMD and Via, mobile phone chip giant Qualcomm on Monday showcased a mini-laptop that could cost around $300 and offer quick wireless access to the Internet via 3G (third generation) mobile telecommunications networks.
Invantec, a Taiwan-based manufacturer has made the laptop and it currently runs on Linux OS, but may also run on the yet to be released Microsoft Windows Mobil7, said Luis Pineda, senior vice president at Qualcomm, reports Yahoo.
Qualcomm hopes Windows Mobile 7 will make its Snapdragon chipsets a tougher competitor in mini-laptops as the pitch is currently dominated by PC processor makers Intel, AMD and Via. The Qualcomm chipsets feature 1GHz Arm processing cores and Gobi for high-speed data connectivity.
Snapdragon is already being employed in the development of around 20 products, including personal navigation devices from Mio Technology, as well as products from HTC and Samsung, Pineda said. |
