 Singapore articulated its plans to be a world power in digital economy on Tuesday at CommunicAsia 2008, a major trade show for Information and Communications Technology Industry, held at Singapore Expo starting from June 17-20.
The state’s information society leaders said it believes that Singapore has the potential to be a regional hub for digital media hosting and service delivery in Southeast Asia, and its plan to build a new, next-generation network will help it materialize this vision.
Thomas Lim, a director at the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) said the country’s iN2015 strategy, which comprise of launching of a nationwide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network, will institute Singapore as ‘a digital media and entertainment capital’ that can host and deliver ‘innovative content and services to the world’.
While backing the plan, Dr. Lee Boon Yang, the minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, unveiled the ‘Digital Marketplace’ program, which will target to develop a trusted and conducive environment for digital media businesses to hub, manage, distribute and trade digital media assets such as movies, video programs, music and mobile content through and from Singapore.
CommunicAsia 2008 will see more than 60,000 industry players from across the world, with companies like Ericsson, PCCW Global, Samsung, Singtel, Tandberg TV, Thaicom Public Company Limited and Yahoo showcasing their latest offerings. |
