Intel’s intentions to cash in on the demand for broadband access terminals is well known as the company is considered to be one of the major advocates for WiMAX based broadband services. But it seems Intel wants to expand its offerings for broadband related services as well. IPTV is one such service which runs on broadband backbone and chip maker Intel appears to be eying this segment to compliment its broadband domain offerings.
The company’s new Atom-based processor named CE4100 aims to integrate broadcast and internet applications on a single chip. Intel says the new processor can support rich media audio and video applications including features such as 3D graphics.
"Traditional broadcast networks are quickly shifting from a linear model to a multi-stream, Internet-optimized model to offer consumers digital entertainment that complements the TV such as social networking, 3-D gaming and streaming video," says Eric Kim, senior vice president and general manager, Intel Digital Home Group. "At the center of the TV evolution is the CE4100 media processor, a new architecture that meets the critical requirements for connected CE devices."
Companies such as Systems, BBC, CBS, Cisco and TransGaming are supporting Intel in this initiative.
The chip is considered to be the first 45nm consumer electronics (CE) System-on-Chip (SoC) based on Intel architecture.
With Adobe, Intel plans to integrate Flash based rich media graphics on to television. With Transgaming, the tie-up aims to offer advanced gaming applications thereby enabling operators to explore new avenues for revenue generation. |
