Ericsson: Wireless Broadband to fade off WiFi Hotspots
TT Bureau |  |  13 Mar 2008

Very soon WiFi hotspots will be replaced by Wireless broadband says Ericsson’s chief marketing officer Johan Bergandahl.

Ericsson as an equipment manufacturer now favors High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) over WiFi. The company recently signed a deal for its HSPA technology to be included in Lenovo laptops.

Cost might be the biggest barrier to adoption of wireless broadband, at least in the U.S. WiFi, on the other hand, is predominantly free.

Analysts however differ with Bergandahl’s observation. According to such analysts, Wireless Broadband still has connectivity problems indoors and it is here where Wi-Fi suits the need. So these analysts claim that complete phase out of Wi-Fi will not happen and Wi-Fi will compliment Wireless broadband.
