MTNL to invest RS 1,145 crore on new services in FY 12
TT Correspondent |  |  28 May 2011

State-run Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL) today said it will be investing Rs1,145 crore in FY12 to launch new services and upgrade its network.

The company''s chairman and managing director Kuldip Singh said it has earmarked a capex of Rs1,145 crore for FY 12 and also plans to launch new features like IP-based (internet protocol) multimedia acoustic services on its network during the year.

MTNL, which holds sizable real estate at prime locations in Mumbai and Delhi, expects revenues from leasing services to grow to Rs50 crore in FY 12 from Rs9 crore last fiscal.

"We are targeting Rs25 crore each from Mumbai and Delhi through leasing of our spaces. Most of our technology was old, so when we replaced the equipment, we have extra space which will be leased out," Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a company event here.

MTNL is also in talks with private operators like Tata Teleservices and Aircel to allow roaming access on each others' networks to 3G customers, an unfinished agenda for the industry since the launch of the next generation wireless services last quarter.

"We are discussing about the 3G sharing with two companies -- Tata and Aircel. We should take a decision in a month or so," he said.

MTNL today launched its push mail services in association with Bharat Berry in Mumbai. The service, which operates securely through servers located in India itself, enables the user synchronise multiple email accounts with the phone and lets him access them at the push of a button.

Also, users can synchronise their calendar and contacts as a part of the service.

The service, which can be availed by any subscriber having a GPRS-enabled phone, will be available to MTNL subscribers for free for the first month, the company's Executive Director, AK Bhargava said.

After the trial period, users will be charged Rs80 per month for the email and personal information management combo pack, while the individual services will be available for Rs50 each per month.

The service will be available for both the pre-paid and the post-paid Dolphin subscribers. Bharat Berry has a two month exclusivity pact with MTNL after which it can also enter into similar tie-ups with other operators in the same circle.
