Sacked Airtel staff return to work in Nigeria
TT Correspondent |  |  14 Oct 2011

Around 3000 sacked call centers workers  services to Airtel Nigeria have have returned to work today in Abuja.  Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC); their labour union; Airtel; and the outsourcing companies reached an agreement following which the workers resumed work.

According to the media reports, the staff, in conjunction with the NLC, had launched a series of protests last week, which saw a disruption in Airtel services in Abuja and some states in the north, as well as the picketing of some of its offices in several states.

More than 3,000 Airtel call centre workers were allegedly sacked recently by its business partners, Spanco Channel BPO and Tech Mahindra Nigeria.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) protested the sack and shut Airtel’s switch in Abuja last week, resulting in disruption of the company''s services.

The Federal Government had, earlier this week, ordered the management of Airtel Nigeria to recall the workers sacked by its partners. The House of Representatives had, last week, directed the company to do same.
