Telcos to pay one-time fee for spectrum beyond 4.4 Mhz
TT Correspondent |  |  20 Jan 2012

The government is believed to have taken a decision that extra spectrum beyond 4.4MHz will be allotted through auction.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of IAMAI Telecom Commission Chairman and Department of Telecommunications Secretary R Chandrashekhar said "We will have to wait for a final decision, but there had been one recommendation that going forward, charges will be levied over 4.4 MHz spectrum."

He also said that the government will also recommend retroactive charges for spectrum beyond 6.2 MHz. "The commission has favoured the option of auction in the matter of determining price," he added.

The regulator provides suggestions on spectrum pricing and mergers and acquisitions to the  Telecom Commission to make recommendations.

The Telecom Commission sometime back had given its nod to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) proposals on mergers and acquisitions rules.

One of the major decisions that the commission has taken is the allocation of spectrum through auction. Apart from this, in one of the major policy changes it has also decided to fix the uniform licence fee of 8 percent for telecom companies from a current 6-10 percent while on the contentious issue of one-time fee for extra spectrum it did not rule out imposing a one-time fee on operators holding spectrum beyond 6.2 mega hertz.
