Consultative Committee on Communications and IT discusses draft national policies on electronics, IT & telecom
TT Correspondent |  |  16 May 2012

The Parliamentary Consultative Committee for Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (C&IT) on Monday discussed draft National policies on Electonics, Information Technology and Telecom here last evening. The Meeting was chaired by Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for C & IT and was attended by the two Ministers of State, Sachin Pilot and Milind Deora.

Sibal said that the draft national policies on Electronics, IT and Telecom together constitute a triad of policies to drive the National agenda for ICTE (Information and Communication Technology and Electronics). He said the three policies are interdependent and will revolutionise the ICTE sector in the country.

While draft National Policy on Electronics-2011 (NPE 2011) envisions creation of a globally competitive electronics design and manufacturing (ESDM) industry to meet the country’s needs and serve the international market, the primary objective of draft National Telecom Policy (NTP 2012) is the multiplier effect and transformational impact of telecom and broadband services which are affordable, reliable and secure. The draft National Policy on IT (NPIT 2011) envisions strengthening and enhancing India’s position as the global hub, and using IT as an engine for rapid, inclusive and sustainable growth in the national economy. Together the three policies would further the national development agenda enhancing equity and inclusiveness.

Members of Parliament, Dr Vinay Kumar Pandey and Shivraj Singh Lodhi, participating in the discussions commended the ministry for staying focused on their work despite some criticism in recent times. The members, however, emphasised that the services offered should be friendly to the common man in terms of affordability and quality. They said employment generation should be regarded as important as revenue generation.
