TT Correspondent |  |  19 May 2012

The US trade representative's office has expressed apprehensions over threat to security of telecom infrastructure due to heavy reliance on imported equipment which found mention in new telecom policy.

The United States side has expressed some concerns over the issue of national (Indian) test standards, security testing of telecom equipment in India and linking of manufacturing of telecom equipment in India with enhancement, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal informed the parliament on Friday.

"Absence of substantial manufacturing base also poses severe long term threats to India's strategic sectors and interests as well as to cyber security, which is a cause for rising concern," the draft National Telecom Policy 2011 said.
