ANTEL Selects ZTE for Uruguay National GPON project
TT Correspondent |  |  10 Oct 2012

ZTE , a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, today announced that it has been selected by Administración Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (ANTEL) to provide a gigabit passive optical network (GPON) for Uruguay.

ANTEL is Uruguay’s largest fixed-line operator and mobile carrier with a 95.5 per cent share of the nation’s broadband market. The GPON project is a continuation of ANTEL’s initial deployment of GPON-based FTTx solutions by ZTE in 2011. ANTEL has won the FTTH Council Americas Awards in 2012 and is considered to be the fastest operator in FTTH deployment in Latin America.

ZTE will assist the operator in delivering a broadband network with a speed of 100Mbps under various scenarios like FTTH, FTTB and backhaul P2P to more than 300,000 families and institutions across the country. This is one of the most aggressive FTTx deployments in the world and will help solidify Uruguay as a world leader in broadband penetration and average speed.

ZTE will provide the ZXA10 C300, a next-generation, convergent full-service optical access platform for the project to meet ANTEL’s growing demands with upgradable NG PON and WDM PON technologies.

“We are honored to assist ANTEL with the GPON project deployment,” said ZTE Vice President Jiang Xiangyang. “Our innovative solutions and rich commercial experience will help ANTEL provide enhanced services to its users and maintain its leading position in Uruguay and Latin America.”

ZTE is one of the first global vendors to develop and commercialize optical access network products. According to market research company Ovum's 2012 Q2 Market Share - FTTx, DSL, and CMTS ports report, ZTE ranks first among major global xPON vendors in revenue growth with a 39.8 per cent share of the PON market. To date, it has deployed 140 million lines of xPON products and 76 million broadband equipment worldwide.
