Pesky calls: Trai seeks suggestions from operators
TT Correspondent |  |  11 Oct 2012

Irked over unsolicited calls and messages despite suggestions of monetary penalty and disconnections by the government, TRAI has sought views of telecom operators to curb this menace within 15 days.

Trai chairman Rahul Khullar in an open session with the operators said that there should be practical solution this problem seeking their suggestions.

The Government in August revealed that it disconnected over 51,000 telephone numbers of unregistered telemarketers. Besides, 88307 notices have been sent to subscribers who have not registered as a telemarketer but were doing the telemarketing activities till July, 2012.

The government said that it is  aware that several calls and SMSs are being sent by subscribers, without getting themselves registered with TRAI as a telemarketer, by using normal telephone connections having numbers, other than the ‘140’ number series allotted to registered telemarketers.

As per ‘The Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations, 2010’, no subscriber, who is not registered with the TRAI as a telemarketer under these regulations, shall make any commercial communication.
