Review: Samsung Galaxy Ace

Why to buy:

It has a good design that appeals youth. It has a good battery life, 5 megapixels camera, and has a number of interesting features that Android provides.

Why to avoid:

Its 800 MHz processor and 268 MB RAM is weak and slow. It doesn’t have front camera and does not support Android latest version.

Our Take:

For Rs 11, 590 it is an option one can look for. But, it has limitations of weak hardware.

Detailed Review

Design:

The Samsung galaxy ace is a mid upper range smartphone. It is economical, less in weight and is pre loaded with many features. Its screen size is 3.5 inches and is protected with corning gorilla glass. The galaxy ace has 112.4mm, 59.9mm and 11.5mm as its dimensions in height, width and depth and it weights just 113 gm. It has a TFT capacitive touchscreen display type and the body is all plastic material but its build quality is strong. The phone holds good grip in hand and fits easily in pockets too. On the right side it has a power/lock key with a micro SD card slot and the left side hold the volume control key. On the top it has a 3.5 mm earjack with a USB port for charging and Connectivity whereas the bottom side is left bare. Below the screen is a physical Home key with Back and Menu Capacitive touch keys. Above its screen is just proximity sensor next to the earpiece. But, galaxy Ace lacks with a dedicated camera key and a front camera too. The overall design of galaxy Ace is very much similar to iPhone 3G and Galaxy Star 2.

Interface/OS:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace runs on Android 2.3.6 version operating system. It comes with 800 MHz ARM 11 processor and it has 278 MB RAM speed. This android version is well supported with this phone but Galaxy Ace lacks with its processor and slower RAM. There are many phones in this segment which offers at least 1 GHz processor with 512 MB RAM. The interface is easy and simple to operate and one can modify it to their own choice.

Memory:

Galaxy Ace offers in-built 158 MB of memory space and 2 GB memory card, which truly makes no interest for memory lovers but through micro SD card it is expandable up to 32 GB. The SMS and phone book entries depend on the availability of memory space in your phone.

Battery:

Samsung Galaxy Ace is power packed with standard Li-Ion 1350 mAh battery, which has done full justice to this device. It delivers the stand by time up to 610 hours on 2G and up to 400 hours on 3G. The Talk Time delivered is also impressive which is up to 11 hours on 2G and up to 6 hours on 3G.

Camera:

Samsung galaxy Ace has a 5 megapixels camera with auto focus and LED flash. It has 2x digital zoom. But, it lacks with a front facing camera. The camera embedded in the devise is good and image quality is fine too. Camera captures video with VGA effects at 24 frames per second. The camera offers multiple shot mode, photo effects and white balance options. The speed is not that quick because of its slow processor and the on board memory space is less too. The overall camera work is good but is limited because of technicalities.

Audio/Video:

The Samsung galaxy ace in-built music player is impressive and so is its quality. The same music player exists in all galaxy phones. It has the DNSe sound enhancing sound technology and equalizer presets but lacks with 5.1 channel virtualization. The audio quality with the headphones is really good but when on loudspeaker mode the quality falls down. Ace also offers you with in-built stereo FM with RDS and is simple to operate and can be enjoyed in loudspeaker mode too. The video player embedded in Galaxy ace is simple and easy to operate. It supports 3GP and MP4 video formats and the plays video up to WVGA resolution. The videos recorded or downloaded can be played with the in-built video player and they can be transferred to TV or computer if supportable.

Features:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is cost effective and simple Android phone and is filled with lot many android features. aGPS, Google Maps, MMS, instant messaging, e-mail and personal organizer functions all exists in-built in Ace. For connectivity you get various options in-built like: Wi-Fi (to enjoy wireless network), Bluetooth 2.1(to share data, photos, videos, etc. with other devices), USB 2.0(to connect you device with TV or Computer/Laptop) and 3.5 mm audio jack (to enjoy music, Radio and Videos). For internet Samsung Galaxy Ace has many options pre installed like: Layer reality browser, android browser, GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA 7.2 MBPS. It supports Quadband GSM (850, 900, 1800 and 1900) 2G Network and Dual band (900 and 2100) 3G Network.

Facebook, Twitter and you tube is embedded in it and the social hub offers a fully incorporated one page layout of your phone book, IM, e-mail and SNS. Galaxy Ace also features Quicktype by SWYPE that helps in quick typing and sense what you want to type. Think Free is also another good feature in this phone that allows you to create, edit and view Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Voice search is also available in this phone, which allows you to speak your search queries. Overall, it has good features that you can enjoy but this Phone has limitations because of its Android version.

Conclusion:

The Samsung Galaxy Ace is a good phone in this price range. The 3.5 inch screen size is attractive, the 5 mega pixels camera works well, the battery life is amazing and the features embedded are rich and abundant. But there are few options that could have make it best in this segment like, front camera, Android gingerbread version, at least 512 MB RAM, HD video resolution, etc. overall we give this phone 3.5 star rating.
