Airtel, Vodafone, Idea can continue 3G service till April 11
TT Correspondent |  |  08 Apr 2013

The Supreme Court on Monday granted an interim relief to three major telcos to continue their 3G services under roaming pacts till April 11 when the next hearing takes place.  The court directed the DoT not to take any action on the telco till Thursday.

These firms have been asked to stop 3G roaming services in circles outside their license zones by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in March.

Bharti Airtel had approached the apex court after High court last week vacated its stay order which prevented government from executing its order asking these companies to stop 3G services.

DoT also levied a penalty of Rs 550 crore and Rs 300 crore on Vodafoen and Idea respectively while Airtel attracted a penalty of Rs 350 crore (Rs 50 crore per circle) for violating the licence terms and conditions. The government in 2011 had declared 3G roaming pacts as illegal.

Following the Supreme Court ruling on Monday Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular surged nearly 4 per cent.
