Telecom players like LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have announced that they will form a working committee for creating an open standard for next generation memory interface technology in mobile devices.
These companies along with other players like Arm, Hynix Semiconductor and ST Microelectronics will launch a first of its kind memory standard for dynamic random access memory (DRAM), dubbed Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT).
The companies claim that this technology will enable to extend battery life, result in bandwidth flexibility, reduce the pin count, and lower the power demand and multiple ports by using a serial interface eradicating the parallel interface usually used in today''s memory devices.
The technology initially will be targeted at the mobile industry but will be in demand by other markets like portable media players, handheld gaming devices and digital still cameras.
The technology will offer the users more data intensive, media rich capabilities like video, GPS, gaming, Internet access, e-mail, multimedia applications and music at a competitive price.
The SPMT working Committee is expected to form a consortium involving handset, memory and chip manufacturers later this year to bring SPMT technology to the industry. |
