Micromax Canvas 4 launched at Rs 17,999 in India
TT Correspondent |  |  09 Jul 2013

Micromax on Monday launched its much awaited Canvas 4 with a price tag of Rs 17,999 amid the media reports that it might take on the Samsung Galaxy S4. But even if some find the comparison misplaced, it is likely to get huge response as the company said that 11,500 units of Canvas 4 have been pre-booked in less than a week after it appeared on company’s website.

Micromax Canvas 4 runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and powered by powered by MT6589, the quad-core processor made by MediaTek which has a tie-up with micromax in India. The recently launched Canvas series smartphones are also powered by the same quad-core processor.

Canvas 4 has a 5-inch screen with 720p resolution and comes with 16GB internal storage and 1GB RAM.  The storage is expandable with microSD card. The device with plastic and an aluminum frame has a distinct look and design form the earlier Micromax handsets.

It sorts a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP front camera.

The company said that it has already moved from 17.1% smartphone market share in Q1 of 2013 to 24.3% in April 2013 as per CyberMedia Research and according to Deepak Mehrotra, CEO, Micromax, is positioned at number two in the category.

Rahul Sharma, co-founder, Micromax said, "With the launch of Canvas 4, we are yet again raising the bar for affordable innovation. Canvas 4 combines great functionality and style, complemented by an entire eco-system of applications that directly address the needs of our evolving consumers."

There are reports which suggest that this could compete with Samsung Galaxy S4 which has a 5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at 441 ppi. It weighs 130g and is 7.9 mm thick; it's slimmer than its predecessor. It comes with an internal memory of 16GB, expandable up to 64GB, and has 2GB RAM. It has a 2600 mAh battery which is 20 per cent larger than that of the S III.

Going by the frequency with which Micromax is launching Canvas series devices, it is pretty clear that it is taking Samsung and Nokia head-on in India. The success story of Canvas series started with the launch of Micromax Canvas HD A116 on February 14 amid great fanfare. It even went out of stock within 48 hours of its launch.

Micromax had also launched its first 3D, 5-inch touch screen smartphone Canvas 3D A115Canvas HD recently. All these devices were received well by the customers.
